Qloud, who is blind, loves to visit the festival, as many artists will allow her to touch their work.  "You don't get to do that at a museum," she says.

  • Beatrice Turner, 89, stands with the .22 caliber pistol she used to fend off an intruder who broke down her front door, left, in the early morning hours.  Turner, who did not want her face shown in this photograph, emerged from her bedroom at rear, fired one shot and missed, then calmed the intruder who was then arrested by Des Moines Police officers who arrived at her northeast Des Moines home.  "About six officers were here, and they reloaded the gun for me," she said.  "All of them were hugging me and telling me how brave I was."

  • "Is it red?"  Annabelle Costanzo, 12, asks of her mother, Gina, while looking at a set of Christmas lights in the living room of her Polk City home. She is putting her improving eyesight to the test each day since undergoing a cornea transplant in her left eye. She can see blue and red clearly now after only being able to see shades of gray before the transplant.  Blind since birth, she has undergone multiple eye surgeries that allow her to see shades of light.

  • Mitchell Grimes, 7, of Greenwich, Conn. became a favorite perch for Morpho butterflies at the butterfly house at the Iowa State Fair Saturday, August 9, 2008.  He is visiting Iowa for a family reunion.  The butterfly house is filled with over 5,000 enormous, colorful tropical butterflies and patrons are allowed, even encouraged, to hold the butterflies, as long as they don't touch the wings.

He was performing concrete work when the skid-steer loader he was driving knocked over the utility pole at left, striking his coworker, who later died from his injuries.

  • Markeshia Kennedy, 16, washes the hair of her sister, Jasmine, 9, while sister DeJoan towels off following her washing in their Des Moines home.  The sisters were working on their hair together in preparation for the first day of school.  The girls along with their mother, Stephanie Kennedy, have settled in Des Moines after their home was flooded by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

  • Helen Hewitt, 72, lies on a bed in the living room of her Des Moines home on Friday with her nephew, Paul Anderson, far right.  She has been unable to pay her utilities and mortgage and is facing a forced move to a nursing home.  She suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other ailments, and wants very much to stay home and die in her own house. "My guts just roll," she says of her mounting debt and the likelihood of being forced to move to a nursing home.

  • Tara Truax, center, of Des Moines, cries out upon sighting her boyfriend, Staff Sgt. Dan Mehmen of Indianola as he exits a plane upon his return from duty in Iraq Thursday morning in Des Moines. The 132nd Fighter Wing will welcome home approximately 250 personnel over the course of the next few days from an Air Expeditionary Force (AEF) deployment to Joint Base Balad, Iraq.  The mission of the 132nd Fighter Wing was to provide armed over-watch of convoys and patrols; non-traditional intelligence, reconnaissance and surveillance; counter rocket and mortar missions; and counter improvised explosive device missions.  To accomplish this, the Wing flew approximately 400 sorties, which involved over 1,000 hours of combat flying.

  • "I love you," Candi Diercks says to her son, Matt, 30,  while planting a kiss on his cheek while he rests before one of his therapy sessions at On With Life, a brain injury rehabilitation center in Ankeny.  Matt was injured in a motorcycle accident in July and has been rehabbing at On With Life since October.  Matt can't speak yet, but responds to his mother's kiss by opening and closing his jaw and an occasional moan.  Candi and her husband, Jeff, moved to Ankeny from Sabula to be near Matt while he recovers.

  • An early dismissal from school combined with pleasant weather made for perfect conditions for a hilltop picnic for a group of friends from North, Lincoln and Southeast Polk High Schools Wednesday at the Pappajohn Sculpture Park in downtown Des Moines.  The slope overlooks "Nomade" a 25-foot-tall sculpture built from randomly arranged stainless steel letters by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa.  "We've driven by so many times and we have always said we wanted to come and have a picnic here," said Lindsey Schultz of Des Moines, one of the picnickers.
