Helen Hewitt, 72, lies on a bed in the living room of her Des Moines home on Friday with her nephew, Paul Anderson, far right. She has been unable to pay her utilities and mortgage and is facing a forced move to a nursing home. She suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other ailments, and wants very much to stay home and die in her own house.
