Charles Henry Walter, 89, of Knoxville flew 25 missions over Europe as a B-26 tail gunner in the 323rd Bombardment Group, 455th Bomb Squadron in World War II. He was shot down over Germany on February 14, 1945, parachuted to the ground, where he was taken prisoner by the Germans until he was freed on April 29, 1945. The painting at rear is a rendering of his B-26 being shot down on that fateful day.
